In the world of construction and masonry, nothing kills productivity faster than a stubborn diamond core bit. You’re geared up to drill through reinforced concrete, only to find the bit "skating" on the surface. Not only does this tank your efficiency, but it also risks overheating your expensive equipment.

As a specialist diamond tool provider, we’ve analyzed the most common hurdles our clients face. Here is your definitive guide to troubleshooting and extending the life of your core bits to lower your cost-per-hole.

1、The "Glazing" Effect: Why Your Bit Stopped Cutting

The Symptom

The segments look intact, but the bit refuses to penetrate the material.

The Cause

This is known as "glazing" or "polishing." It happens when the metal bond is too hard for the material being drilled, or there isn't enough abrasion to wear the bond away. The diamond grits become blunt and rounded rather than sharp and exposed.

The Solution: Dressing the Bit

The Fix

Reduce the water flow and drill into a specialized Aluminum Oxide Dressing Stone or a highly abrasive material like firebrick or sandstone.

How it Works

The abrasive material wears away the top layer of the metal bond, "exposing" fresh, sharp diamond crystals underneath.

Pro Tip: If you're unsure which dressing material to use, contact us.

2. Excessive Vibration: Why is My Drill Shaking?

The Symptom

Violent shaking of the rig, sore hands, and out-of-round holes.

The Cause

  1. Concentricity Issues: A bent spindle on the drill motor or a damaged adapter.

  2. Uneven Wear: One or more segments have chipped off or worn down faster than others, creating an imbalance.

  3. RPM Mismatch: The rotation speed isn't optimized for the bit's diameter.

The Golden Formula

The ideal peripheral cutting speed (Vc) is generally between 2–5 m/s.
Use this to find your RPM:The Golden Formula

3. Help! My Core Bit is Stuck in the Hole

This is a nightmare scenario on-site, but don't panic.

What NOT to do:

Do not play "Thor" with your drill. Avoid hitting the barrel with a heavy sledgehammer or using massive pipe wrenches to force it. This will permanently deform the steel barrel.

The Right Move:

Try to reverse the drill (if the motor allows). If it's stuck due to a jammed core or slurry, let it cool down, then use a dedicated core extraction tool or light tapping to vibrate the debris loose.

4. Segment Loss & The "Blue Barrel" Warning

  1. Segment Loss
Usually caused by overheating (which softens the braze/weld) or hitting loose rebar that creates a sudden, violent impact.

  2. Blue Discoloration
If your steel barrel is turning blue, it’s a major red flag. This indicates extreme overheating due to insufficient water or excessive dry drilling. The heat has likely "tempered" the steel, making it brittle and prone to cracking.

5. Maintenance Checklist: Extend Your Bit Life by 30%

Checkpoint Action Purpose
Threads/Interface Apply Graphite Grease Prevents the bit from seizing to the machine
Barrel Inspection Check for "Run-out" (Wobble) Ensures smooth cutting and prevents jamming
Storage Store vertically in a dry place Prevents rust and maintains balance

Summary: The Right Tool for the Right Task

Every drilling job is unique. For high-density rebar, you likely need a Laser-Welded bit with a specific bond; for soft brick, a High-Frequency Welded bit offers the best ROI.
